I know that this is probably harmless. But remember that GTK+ should
theoretically have been declared stable by now - don't you think it's a
bit late in the GNOME schedule for additions of whole API?

What bug is this? This doesn't seem justified unless something really
needs it and can't wait. Hopefully that's the case.
