Labels may be wide, but what if an arbitrary widget is used?
The ONLY example I can think of is Microsoft's system tray on Windows XP.
Items which are not used for much of the time, are hidden and a "<<" button
appears to expand the system tray and display all icons available.
An example of a vertical expander (and I'm sorry to relate to yet another
Microsoft idea) is their "Personalised Menus" approach. Again, this hides
items on menus which are not used a lot of the time.
