The anti-aliased text is all handled by the Xft library and the X
server, so GTK+ isn't really involved.
My guess is that that the RENDER extension implementation is just buggy
for the 5-5-6 case ... nobody is going to test that much, since 5-6-5
works better and is what you typically find on PC hardware.
