To answer the quark part of your question: quarks are the same thing as
atoms in X: integers used to represent arbitrary strings in a compact way.
While for X atoms, the map string -> quark is maintained in the server,
for glib quarks, each application has its own map (thus quarks can't be
used for inter-process communication).
