Removing spaces from a toolbar?

Is there a way to remove spaces from a toolbar?  I can remove all widgets
using GtkContainer functions, but the spaces aren't widgets.

(I'm rebuilding a toolbar when a notebook page is switched.  If someone
has a better idea...)
