New Text Widget?

Sorry to bug the list about this but I couldn't find anything in the archives...

I'm writing a MUD client and I ran into trouble right at the beginning.  I need a nice fast way of displaying text, and both gtktext and zvtterm didn't cut it for me.  I was considering writing a custom widget for this application but then I saw the plans for the new text widget in gtk+-1.4.  I was wondering where I can find some specifications for this widget to find out if it is faster than the current gtktext and zvtterm widgets.
