I have written a translator for old style defs.
Look for it in guile-gtk/toolkit/translate/
It does a good job for functions but I have not finish checkin enums.
Equally to James, I pack defs file in the guile-gtk distro
for generating defs file at run time is not reliable enouh.
You can also reuse the *defs file I have generated for guile-gtk
