Just an update..
I've made about 15 phone calls using the pc-to-phone and the last 2
calls have actually been ok. I can carry on a conversation with the
other party..
So this leads me to believe that part of the problem could have been
my own mic, the volume settings... but there's still conciderable
"digitizing" of the voice and a lot of drop-outs (i don't see much
packet loss... ~0.2%) and the other party mentioned quite a bit of
echo, even though i'm using a headset.
