1) What is one supposed to do with all the sound codecs in the
preferences? Why would I want to use a given codec, rather than
another?
You don't get to choose the exact codec used, but their preference
order. Sound codecs are not equal. Some are generic sound codecs, and do
not do that well for voice, some do well for voice but not for other
sounds ; they don't have the same bandwith requirements...
2) In the past, I have been able to test against the voxgratia robot
with some success. All of a sudden, however, whenever I start a
connection to it GM prints out the following message:
Could not open audio channel for audio transmission
I have used the lsof command to check out /dev/dsp, and nobody seems
to be using it.
Do you have a sound daemon running? Another app trying to play sound?
What is going on? My sound board is working fine - as is most
gallingly illustrated by the fact that skype still works flawlessly.
Raahhh... skype...
