I had a simelar problem. Automake 1.6 and Automake 1.9 installed. The
./autogen.sh told me the same. I tracked it down to my Automake M4-Makro
that tests that: it only knew up to 1.7. So I changed autogen.sh to
look for minimum AM 1.6. Then it found my 1.6.3 package. Maybe you could do simelar. Again, the problem are the
auto*.m4 macros.
