Gaps are due to "late packets". When there are many late packets coming
from the remote endpoint, GnomeMeeting 0.96.1 will increase the jitter
buffer automatically, it will reduce the "gaps". On the other side,
GnomeMeeting 0.85.1 is unable to increase the jitter buffer, so the
"gaps" will remain.

The echo is due to the fact that your microphone is too near of your
speakers. Buying a headset (I have a 5 Euros headset) will fix the
problem.

No, having late and lost packets on a LAN is not normal. That should
stay below 10. I suggest you to check your cables/network card. Buying a
headset will certainly remove the "echo", but the "gap" will remain as
long as you have late or lost packets. Late packets are packets that
arrive too late to be played, or it would break your voice heavily as
they arrive after some other packets which are newer have been played.
Increasing the jitter buffer can increase the received audio quality.
But again, that is not normal, even on the internet directly to have
many lost/late packets.
