Nothing else should be using the video device.  I can run xawtv with the camera, exit xawtv, start gnomemeeting, and no picture or device to select.    Maybe this will help... here's the output of xawtv -hwscan

This is xawtv-3.54, running on Linux/i686 (2.4.7-10)
