RPM-Packages are scanned for libraries, which can be found in the package, and
for missing (unresolved) libraries. The first are added to the "provides"
entry of the package, the second to the "requires". If you try to install a
package, your local rpm database is scanned if you have installed packages
which provide the libraries which are needed. There are to common reasons for
failing of this lookup:
1. Installing from source, the libraries are installed to the right location,
but rpm is not involved, so it does not know anything about them.
2. The packages are build with scanning for dependencies disabled, then the
entries for the "requires" and "provides" section have to be added by hand.

If you want to know more about rpm, have a look at:
http://www.rpm.org/ , especially the "Documentation" section.

Hope this helps,
Stefan
