Re: [GnomeMeeting-devel-list] transform gnomemeeting core into a reusable component

Hi,

Technically it is feasible to do a DBUS component reusable by other
programs and that is the way to go. We "simply" have to discuss with
other developers interested in that component to know what they would
like to be able to control for the conference.

GAIM developers will probably not want that functionnality as they are
moving away from GNOME and want to stay a GTK+-only application. Notice
DBUS components work both for GNOME and KDE, which means that a
GnomeMeeting DBUS component will be reusable in a KDE application too.

Now, on another side, you can only have one instance of GnomeMeeting
running at the same time (most soundcards and webcams only accept to be
accessed by one program at a time), it means that you can only have 1
component active at the same time and in that case I don't see how we
could exactly reproduce what is in your fake screenshot. Notice also
that having several participants at the same time in a conference
requires that you are using a MCU. Coding a MCU inside GnomeMeeting is
possible but doesn't make much sense to me as people don't have enough
bandwidth for that. Relying on an external MCU is possible, but I don't
see anybody who will provide such a service for free.

I think that the best is to start with a DBUS component, reusable in
other GNOME and KDE programs, and allowing 1-to-1 videoconferencing (or
1-to-n if a MCU is used) but have only one video window. Actually, that
component would be the current video window of GnomeMeeting + a few
controls (audio? video?) and a right-click menu.

Comments?
