i have it sometimes too.
for info my system is debian unstable.
as you told when it happens, it tells process 1 which is init process,
and no way to have a backtrace in gdb.
as we talked once, at lest for me, execution of gm in gdb is so slow,
that if it's a problem of timeout of a function or something else, when
run in gdb the problem doesn't appear.
