make install: Cannot open rcfile /usr/local/lib/X11/app-defaults/XScreenSaver

Hey there,

I'm trying to compile the new control center (1.5.8) on my
aging COL 2.3 system. When it comes time to do a make install
for control-center-1.5.8 I get the following error:

/usr/bin/perl magic.pl --adfile
/usr/local/lib/X11/app-defaults/XScreenSaver --merge
/usr/local/share/control-center/screensavers
Cannot open rcfile /usr/local/lib/X11/app-defaults/XScreenSaver
make[4]: *** [install-data-local] Error 2
make[4]: Leaving directory
`/mnt/mp/download/control-center-1.5.8/capplets/screensaver/screensavers'

It looks like on my system the file it's looking for is in fact:
/etc/X11/app-defaults/XScreenSaver

What course of action should I take?

Would symlinking /etc/X11 to /usr/local/lib/X11 be a reasonable
plan of attack?
