bonobo-conf vs autoconf

I have problems with various packages building with autoconf 2.52
for example:

Running aclocal  -I macros ...
Running autoheader...
./aclocal.m4:127: error: m4_defn: undefined macro: _m4_divert_diversion
acfunctions.m4:330: AM_FUNC_ERROR_AT_LINE is expanded from...
./aclocal.m4:127: the top level
autoconf: tracing failed
**Error**: autoheader failed.

then gnome-control-center also fails etc. what can be a problem?

Debian unstable
automake (GNU automake) 1.4-p4
GNU m4 1.4
