I've push my other tasks aside and can devote my attention to the
donation database. I have some questions, and would appreciate some
direct as to where I can find the answers if you don't already know
them. The questions might appear that I'm thinking of over building a
donorDB and manager, but I simply want to get the scope of the task
defined. I think some of the commerce issues are not trivial and must
be understood by all parties to avoid confusion.
The Web site:
Q. Will there be a GNOME store/e-commerce Web site?
Q. Are Paypal transactions managed through emai,l or through the Paypal
Web site. Should Paypal be automated, and integrated with the donorDB?
Q. TrustCommerce provides an excellent set of tools to work with, is
there a preferred set like PHP or Python?
Q. Who will be responsible for the HTTPS Secure server that the donor
data is submitted too? The same crew as w.g.o?
The database:
Q. Where should the donation database live? On the same network as the
Web site/store is the best answer. Should it, or a copy of it, reside
on another network?
Q. Is there a preferred DB application like PostgeSQL or MySQL? The
host of the DB might have a different preference than the users who edit
and generate reports from it.
Q. How should the Foundation access it? A Web interface for the
Foundation to make additions, edits, and generate reports?
Q. Do we need to want download/export the data as a Gnumeric spread
sheet. Would simple DB access tools like Mergeant be appropriate?
Q. In the case collecting donations at conventions, I'm inclined to
think a kiosk connected the the Web site is best. Should an alternate
mechanism be used by the Foundation to handle checks? The Foundation
accesses the donorDB to enter the cleared check information from
location X. Is Ximian, or a Foundation representative responsible for
updating the donorDB after checks have cleared?
