Great, this workaround does indeed do the trick
Perhaps one should add this to the documentation of GnomeVfs?
Something like:
In case you are using GnomeVfs in a multithreaded environment, and you
want to use the gdb-debugger, it's recommended that you run the command
handle SIG33 nostop noprint
at the gdb-commandline
