gnome-vfs to create tar archive

Hi 
I want to create a .tar archive, but I could not make it work using the 
gnome_vfs_create_uri() command - it gives me a 0 byte file i cannot use for 
further commands.
file-roller creates .tar files with bash commands, but I did not want to go 
that way; is there a simple solution to this problem?
