theme distortion?

I recently started using Gnome (rather than KDE. My hard drive bit the
dust so I bought a new one I just reinstalled everything. At first,
Gnome looked very nice, but after not too long the icons in the panel
looked bad and various applications had random "squares" (white and
other distorted textures) appearing. The only thing I did was change
what theme I was using and I switched back to the default and it still
happens. Maybe someone has seen this before and knows how to fix it? It
is really annoying me. I have no idea what could be the problem.
Restarting gnome, xwindows or the entire system does nothing.

Here's some info you may need. I'm using the default Crux for GTK+ and
Sawfish's themes. The video adapter is an onboard Intel i810 chipset
one. The resolution is 1600x1200 at 16M colors. I don't think the
monitor matters, but its a Viewsonic PF790.

I appreciate any assistance, I'm not even sure if this is the right
place to ask but I'm hoping someone can help. Screenshots are linked
below.

TIA,
Sarah
