Re: Icon anywhere on the desktop

I know of no way to minimize windows to the desktop.

Have you considered using workspaces? They're like virtual desktops,
which CDE should have also had.

You can switch between workspaces with the "Workspace Switcher" applet
(right-click the gnome panel, select "Add To Panel -> Utility ->
Workspace Switcher").

You can also assign keyboard shortcuts to easily move between them, in
the Keyboard Shortcuts preferences applet. Look under "Window
Management", for the "Switch to workspace N" actions.

I find workspaces to be a godsend, and find it difficult to manage large
numbers of open windows without them.

I also tend to use the "Menu Panel" (right-click gnome panel, select New
Panel -> Menu Panel). This is always across the top of the screen, and
has a window list at the far right (like Mac OS Classic). I find this
window menu easier to use (and more scalable) than the Window List
applet in the default gnome panel.
