man esd
-b run server in 8 bit mode

The trick is figuring out where esd is started buy GNOME and adding the 
option.
/etc/esd.conf has a line "spawn_options". Add " -b" to the end of that 
line, the restart esd.
The man page says /etc/esound/esd.conf , but Red Hat appears to have 
changed it to /etc/esd.conf without changing the man page.
