I'm not at all familiar with XST, but the problem being solved here
sounds familiar.

Samba deals with this with two options:

   printcap name = /etc/printcap
   load printers = yes

gnome-print could do something similar; have settings in the XML file
that instruct it to go parse /etc/printcap, and then supplement that
information with what's in other parts of the XML file.  This could be
extended to allow importing of other types of printer configurations,
too.  That way if users edit /etc/printcap by hand, they get their
printers showing up with no special options; if they use XST or some
other tool that knows about the XML file, everything's taken care of
for them.
