If you have /proc/bus/usb/devices, and you can successfully use
pilot-xfer, then you should be able to get gnome-pilot working.

Try re-running gpilotd-control-applet and configuring
everything.  Let us know how far you get and if you still have
problems.  There are several reports of success with gnome-pilot
and Ubuntu dapper, so don't give up!
