In order to get the ToDo db over from the pilot, I have to first delete the corresponding file on the computer? That's strange, but fine with me ... but there's actually no such file there already. Should I make one, perhaps with "touch"?

No, the fact that there's not a ToDo db file there indicates that I was incorrect about the problem.

The next thing to try is to remove the applet from the panel, kill gpilotd and to run gpilot-applet from the command line. What this does (at least for me) is to give you lots of debugging output. This may give you more details about what is going wrong with the backup.

Can anyone tell me what this means?

PS: it hangs after printing the last line.
