I have the same problem. My Palm is a m500.
My .*pilot.*-versions are:
gnome-pilot-2.0.9-1
pilot-link-0.11.5-4
gnome-pilot-conduits-2.0.9-1
evolution-pilot-1.4.1-1
I'm using RedHat 9 with kernel version 2.4.30-18.9.

Okay, that's done. Doesn't help.
I put the ID manually in the ~/.gnome2/gnome-pilot.d/gpilotd:
[Pilot0]
name=m500
pilotid=1
creation=0
romversion=0
pilotusername=Dominik
Doesn't help.
