Tried again with the latest (or later) and greatest (or greater)
version. I still see a hang why synching:
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 5 Sep 23 17:06 /dev/pilot->ttyS1
crw-rw---- 1 root kt 4, 65 Mar 3 18:48 /dev/ttyS1
Any idea why it hangs?

Sorry about my delay here. Are you able to install the database via
pilot-xfer? pilot-xfer -p <port> -i <database>?
Pilot-xfer will get at least further down the list of files before
freezing than gpilotd.
I'm going to investigate getting a USB cradle, assuming no one has any
other ideas.
