This worked! I added:
ACLOCAL_FLAGS="-I /home/tg/src/gob/ $ACLOCAL_FLAGS"
export ACLOCAL_FLAGS

to autogen.sh and it picked it up. Thanks Håvard.

I now have the same problem as the one that Sean mentioned in his email.
