I'll try to help track this down, time allowing. Yesterday, I started
gpilotd manually early in the day and did a sync. Later in the day, I
tried to sync but without any response at all (I always tail -f the system
log as well as the redirected output from startx, so that's where I look for
messages). I looked for gpilotd in gtop, didn't see it, started it again.
It popped up two blank dialogs and printed to messages to stdout/stderr
(sorry, I don't still have them), I had to kill it, then I started it again
and it's been running since then (done two syncs since then). When I have a
little more time over the next few days, I'll test it more systematically
and report back.
