Is it worth taking a middle ground, and providing versions of rpmmacros
for different distros, rather than my original suggestion of doing it
all in .spec?

And maybe compiling a list of where different distros install bits, eg:

SuSE prefix=/opt/gnome sysconfdir=/etc/opt/gnome (although this will be
changing to /usr and /etc respectively apparently)
