seeing as Abiword and Gnumeric are 1.x, i would suggest jumping to Gnome
Office v1.0 as soon as possible (for cynical marketing reasons if nothing
else).

Abiword has a .eml export plugin.

does Evolution understand .eml files?
they simple bog standard emails saved as plaintext using the .eml
extension.

Abiword also has a human readable text, which does *bold* /italic/ and
_underline_ which might be a nice effect to pass on to Emails.
I was considering that certain types of plugins could be shared if the
plugin API was harmonised.

I would not like to encourage people to send files as attachments when
people really should just be copying and pasting the text into the body of
the message or at the very worst use hypertext rather than a Word
Document.
