ESD words, Sounds in gnome does not.

Hello,
	I'm running Slackware 8.0, and the latest ALSA sound drivers with
OSS support added in. Gnome and Esd both start fine for me, but no sounds
work in Gnome. The 'Sounds for events' and 'Enable sound server startup'
options have both been selected. Clicking on a specific sound event and
telling it to Play results in nothing-- and the ESD Volume Meter showed no
movements.
	However, esdplay /opt/gnome/share/sounds/card_shuffle.wav works,
and shows movement on the volume meter.
	I'm baffled. :)
