E-Sound / Kernel 2.4.0

Hi,

I'm using Debian Gnu/Linux stable with the Helix Gnome Desktop.
My sound card is a Creative Labs SB 128 PCI.
As long as I used a 2.2.xx kernel, MP3s played with xmms and the
esound-output-plugin sounded great. But since I updated to a
2.4.0 Kernel, the output quality has somehow decreased. Any ideas??
