gnome 2.14 performance

Dear all,

after installing gnome 2.14 on freebsd-6.0 (stable) i noticed marked 
performance degradation (e. g. slower than an XP desktop) of gnome and all 
gnome based applications (screensaver almost takes 30 seconds to pop up). 
what is this due to and how can it be amended ? and, yes, I use the newest 
versiona, and yes all ports have been upgraded when gnome 2.14 was installed 
and np, other desktops like xfce4 do not show this grossly reduced 
performance.
