I found a thread discussing the same issue on an ubuntu list.  It seems the
default handler for sftp is missing.

The following does, however, fix the problem:

[3:19] [ben:/home/treed]% gconftool-2 --type boolean --set
/desktop/gnome/url-handlers/sftp/enabled true
[3:19] [ben:/home/treed]% gconftool-2 --type string --set
/desktop/gnome/url-handlers/sftp/command "/usr/bin/nautilus %s"
