if your applications menu is empty, its likely that you dont have the
file `/etc/xdg/menu/applications.menu'.

said in garnome README file, if you install your gnome build into
prefix `/usr/local', then you may want to config you enviroment , set
`XDG_CONFIG_DIRS=/usr/local/etc/xdg'
