Cannot edit menu

The gnome documentation says about editing menu to enter the uri
applications:/// in the file manager.  When trying to do so I receive
the following error message:

"applications:///" is not a valid location.
Please check the spelling and try again.

It does the same for preferences:///

Someone knows why and I can fix it?
