Desktop background without Nautilus

Hi!
I have disabled Nautilus. After I did that the desktop background is
no longer set when I log in. I can still get the background set by
manually opening the background-settings dialog, so it seems to work
without Nautilus, it's only that it isn't set automatically on
login. Is there a solution for this?
I'm using Gnome 2.6.1, Debian unstable.
/Pelle
