"Relink libgail.la" error while compiling gail

I'm trying to install gdesklets and, as such, one of the dependencies I
have to install first is gail.  However, I'm having trouble doing so;
I'm getting the following error (pasted from std_err):

I've tried to reinstall libgnomecanvas and libtool, neither of which
helped.  Does anyone know the cause of this error?
