File chooser

Why oh why does the file chooser not distinguish between files and folders other than sorting folders first and then files?  

Yes, your going to tell me it does... but...

Try opening a gnome term, do su then gedit /etc/yum.conf then press the open tool bar button, no icons in the list so how do I know what si a folder and what is a file?

Frustrating...
