what alternatives to the task bar applet are there

I have some users which have a large number (20-30 or more) of related
applications running within a metacity workspace.

They are unsatisfied with attempting to use the standard gnome taskbar
applet for selecting minimized applications.  

Is anyone aware of alternative methods for dealing with large numbers
of applications?  For instance, is there perhaps a way to have metacity
display running applications as icons on the desktop ?
