Installation path for schema files

I'm building GNOME 2.2.1 on Solaris 9/SPARC. What is the difference
between the following options?
--enable-gconf-source=sourceaddress
--with-gconf-source=sourceaddress
--with-gconf-schema-file-dir=dir
My defaults for the above are:
--enable-gconf-source="xml::/opt/gnome22/etc/gconf/gconf.xml.defaults"
--with-gconf-schema-file-dir="/opt/gnome22/etc/gconf/schemas"
I'm installing gnome in /opt/gnome22 but the default icon theme is not
found. I ran a truss against gconf-editor and don't see
desktop_gnome_interface.schemas being loaded, or any schema under
/opt/gnome22/etc/gconf/schemas.
Is it possible to set additional search paths in the environment? I
know that $prefix/etc/gconf/path allows you to define additional paths
but I'm looking for an environment variable to set.
