problem removing the menu pane

Hi,

I created my own panel (neat feature in gnome 2) and then removed the 
default menu panel. Everything was fine, till I log out and then logged in 
again. My panel was there (I saved the settings) however the menu panel was 
also there. Is there any way to get rid of the menu panel permanently?
