Show desktop button not working?

Hello,
I am using Gnome 2.2 on Debian sid; the show desktop button on the left
side of the bottom panel should be supposed to hide all windows and show
the desktop, but in my case it doesn't do anything.
Is this a bug or am I misunderstanding something?
