logout delay + odd behavior

When I click to logout of gnome it doesn't do anything for like 3-4 minutes until the confirmation box appears. If I then goto cancel and click to logout again the confirmation box appears right away.
I moved all the .gnome files in my home dir to a sub
directory to see if gnome would recreate the config file
correctly. Well, it mostly did, except that there were no
buttons on the taskbar, but then after about a minute or
two it started flashing between the empty taskbar and one
with all the proper buttons.

I have to manually start rpc.statd and rpc.lockd before
logging in. Otherwise if give me some nfs error. For
some reason putting both those in /etc/rc.d/boot.local
doesn't work.
For a little background information, all the problems
started happening after upgrading some of my client
machines from suse 8.1 to 8.2. The home directories are
stored on a server running suse 8.1.
