And I of course am not advocating removal of it before an acceptable
substitute is available :)

Just my opinion : modemlights applet "is" my dialer. And it's a very
cool feature of gnome. I never used gppp or kppp because they just
don't work on my system (Mdk8.2 PPC).
And I don't like these big windows for displaying such a little
information : are you connected or not ?
To be a real and very cool dialer, Modemlights only needs to offer the
ability to set different connections for different IAP and to choose
between them.
