Do you want to GET the size of the image, or change the size of the
image prior to loading it into Gnome Canvas?

You can easily get the size of the image by either loading it in GIMP or
some other similar application...

OR, is it that you want to be able to get the image information so that
it can be DISPLAYED in the application?

Real computer scientists don't write code.  They occasionally tinker with
`programming systems', but those are so high level that they hardly count 
(and rarely count accurately; precision is for applications).
