gtk apps don't see all fonts under KDE

I have the problem, that all gtk applications including Gimp, Ethereal, and
also Phoenix cannot see all fonts under KDE.
Under Phoenix, which has an elaborate font selection option, I can only see a
very limited set of fonts.
I checked XF86Config, but of course all font paths are ok (KDE sees everything
anyway). Where else could I look for?
