gnome2 with IceWM

I've been trying to set up IceWM under gnome2 as my desktop
environment (RH8.0). So far everything works as it should, but I'm
not able to use gnome's pager on the gnome-panel with IceWM as the
window manager.

The gnome-panel seems to have kept its configurations and to function
correctly except that its pager is only a stub (it is present on
gnome-panel and can be configured, but no virtual desktops appear). 

Someone suggested that this is perhaps because IceWM does not support
the WM specification, which I take to mean that IceWM may not support
the desktop API offered by gnome.

Can anyone comment on this or suggest how I might get the gnome pager
working? I think I may have that someone did get it the gnome pager
running under IceWM, but can't document it.

I discovered that one can run both the gnome-panel and the IceWM
taskbar under gnome2 simultaneously as long as one does not type keys
that have contradictory bindings ;^( --it blows X right out of the
water. Is it possible simply to edit keybindings to have both panels
coexist peacefully?
